A DANGEROUS suspected criminal who escaped from the Thohoyandou police station’s holding cells a fortnight ago was rearrested in Mvudi Park, Muledane on Saturday, where he allegedly attempted to rape two women.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi, the suspect, Tshilidzi Nelson Masindi (36), was rearrested and was presently recovering from serious injuries under police guard at a local hospital.

This was after he was severely assaulted by residents who responded to the two women’s cries for help.

“Masindi faces charges of rape, burglary, assault, murder, and charges of escaping from lawful custody and attempted rape have been added,” Mulaudzi said.

He added that Masindi escaped from police custody wearing a police uniform, which he stole from a steel cabinet where the court orderlies stored their uniforms.

“Internal processes are still underway regarding the police official whose uniform aided the suspect to flee,” Mulaudzi said.

Masindi was still under medical treatment in hospital and would appear before court soon, he concluded.
