POLOKWANE – The Hindu community celebrated Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, at the Shree Gita Mandir Temple in Nirvana on Sunday.
The celebration was filled with devotional songs, garba (folk dancing), offerings and rocking the cradle of baby Sri Krishna.
After the prayers, the members each received warm milk, blessed fruits and other treats to enjoy.
The sole objective of Sri Krishna’s birth was to free the earth from the evil of demons, and the actual celebration of Janmashtami takes place during midnight. It is believed that Sri Krishna was born on a dark, stormy and windy night to end the rule and violence of his uncle, Kansa. After the celebration of Krishna’s birthday, the outgoing committee members of the Pietersburg Hindu Seva Samaj: Harshad Mistry, Vinod Jamnadas and Jyoti Mistry stepped down and the new committee members were announced and welcomed. The new members are Prakash Dayah (chairperson), Navin Purohit (deputy chairperson), Kishor Dayah (treasurer), Lenesh Lutchman (assistant treasurer) and Divesh Kara (secretary).
