Human error to blame for Makhado’s water pressure, stoppages

It seems that human error was to blame for the poor water pressure and stoppages in Makhado last week.

MAKHADO – It seems that human error was to blame for the poor water pressure and stoppages in Makhado last week.

AfriForum Makhado chairperson, Wally Schultz, told Review that he received several telephone calls from residents about the low water pressure and stoppages in town. He immediately investigated the matter.

“I contacted the Vhembe District Municipality, but nobody there could give me any answers. They said all the water pumps were in working order and there were no big leaks. I decided to inspect all the reservoirs in town to check on their levels,” he said.

“All the reservoirs were in good condition and the levels were fine, until I arrived at the hospital reservoir and found it locked. I called the municipality for assistance and they sent some workers who arrived shortly afterwards.”

Schultz said none of the workers had a key for the lock on the reservoir.

“This is not the first time that a lock without a key was a problem. Only two weeks ago I had to smash a lock on the gate at a borehole that needed repairs after we waited for three hours for a key.”

He said they discovered that the water pressure problems were due to the fact that a supervisor closed a valve instead of opening it and could not correct his error, as the reservoir was locked.

“So they just left the problem for five days until I arrived.”

Spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Moses Shibambu could not comment on the matter at the time of going to print.
