Go kart track in flames

Employees of Working on Fire (WOF) and the Polokwane fire department had their work cut out for them when a veld fire nearly destroyed the Polokwane Go Kart Club on Wednesday.

POLOKWANE – Employees of Working on Fire (WOF) and the Polokwane fire department had their work cut out for them when a veld fire nearly destroyed the Polokwane Go Kart Club on Wednesday.

According to firefighters at the scene, the fire started as a veld fire. They said because the veld is so dry, the fire spread quickly and was further fuelled by the tyres at the track.

The fire was eventually brought under control and prevented from spreading further. This fire came just three months after the previous fire at the track on June 6.

Speaking on behalf of WOF, Matema Gwangwa, said it was important for residents to be aware that it was currently the dry season, and that veld fires could be caused very easily by something as small as a cigarette butt. A WOF manager, Alwyn Kruger, said the WOF team had been fighting a lot of fires over the past few months, and urged residents to think before making fires.

Dean Rudiger, manager of the Polokwane Go Kart Club, said the damage suffered was minor.

He said only a few windows and tyres had been lost. “We are grateful that there were just minor losses and that no one got hurt in the fire.”
