5 years in jail for a rapist

THE Naphuno regional court recently sentenced a 65-year-old man to an effective five years' imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old boy.

THE Naphuno regional court recently sentenced a 65-year-old man to an effective five years’ imprisonment for raping a 14-year-old boy.

Gideon Magotong Mametja from Ga-Mametja village in the Sekororo area was convicted of repeatedly raping the boy between June 2008 and February 2010.

The court heard that Mametja would visit the boy’s home while his parents were away and raped him under the pretext of showing him how men could have sex with each other.

He raped him on different occasions over a two-year period until a case was opened in 2010.

He was immediately arrested and remained in police custody until his sentencing last Friday.

Tzaneen cluster police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said the sentence was welcomed by the police and it would serve as a deterrence to would-be rapists.
