THE 23-year-old man who was dubbed the “hammer man” was rearrested in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon after the police had been searching for him for the past year.
David Mamvura, a Zimbabwean national, was rearrested in a flat in the central part of the city after the police received information about his whereabouts.
Mamvura is believed to have been responsible for at last eight incidents of house burglary as well as rape and assault.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said Mamvura was first arrested over a year ago after he allegedly broke into the house of an elderly couple in Bodenstein Street, Polokwane.
He allegedly raped the 76-year-old woman and fled after taking two cell phones. He is also thought to have been the person who attacked a couple in their sleep in their home in Eduan Park, Polokwane where he beat up the man with a hammer and raped his wife before fleeing with items such as cell phones. In October 2012 a 22-year-old woman was tied up, raped and robbed, and Mamvura is also the suspect in this case.
“The suspect, who appeared before the Polokwane magistrate’s court in August last year, was released on R2 000 bail. He skipped bail and was on the run ever since, probably committing more burglaries along the way,” Mulaudzi said.
Mamvura will appear before court soon.
