Police teach residents how to prevent crime

The Westenburg police held a Women Against Crime Awareness Campaign in celebration of Women's Month last Saturday.

POLOKWANE – The Westenburg police held a Women Against Crime Awareness Campaign in celebration of Women’s Month last Saturday.

The celebration was held at the Covenant City Church in Lesedi Park. Women in action against abuse and rape, was the theme of the day, along with celebrating 20 years of fighting against the abuse of women and children.

The key message from the different speakers was women must break the silence against women and child abuse by reporting it to the police.

Guests also received “Break the Silence on Domestic Violence” leaflets.

The leaflets contained information on the following key points:

• What is a domestic relationship?

• What is domestic violence?

• What the options are for a victim of domestic violence.

• What is a protection order?

• Who can apply for a protection order?

• What a victim can do if the perpetrator disobeys a protection order.

The Seshego Choir, Mathepa Ladies Jazz Band from Seshego and Youth Perfection from Moletjie performed at the celebration.

The Polokwane K9 unit also had a narcotics search demonstration, which was done by Const Tiny Morakaladi and her canine partner Lyla. After all the formalities, the guests were treated with a warm meal and something to drink.
