GIYANI – A Greater Giyani Municipality driver won the provincial award as the best driver of the year in the light delivery vehicles (LDV) category in a Road Traffic Management Cooperation (RTMC) competition recently.
Dzunisani Zitha, won first place at district level and proceeded to the provincial level of the competition where he walked away with R5 000 and a trophy.
Organised by RTMC, the competition aims to recognise individuals and teams that contribute to safer roads by way of proper driving on public roads.
Asked what he had learnt through the competition, Zitha said: “Driving is not just knowing how to move a car from one point to another, but an understanding that one need not inconvenience other motorists while driving”.
“Some drivers would either overtake at the wrong spot or simply change lanes without indicating, which results in accidents. The competition teaches drivers to be observant and remain alert for such drivers at all times,” he said.
Zitha will proceed to compete in the competition, Best of the Best, which is scheduled for 2016, where he stands a chance to be selected to represent the country in the World Championship competition to be held in Finland.
Municipal spokesperson, Steve Mavundza, congratulated all the drivers who made their mark during the competition.
“As a municipality, we take pride in the fact that year after year our drivers outshine those in the other municipalities, he said, urging the rest of the drivers in the municipality to take part in the competition as a way of improving their driving skills.
