LIMPOPO – The Limpopo police made a major breakthrough when they arrested one of Limpopo’s most wanted suspects, a 27-year-old man who was wanted for the alleged rape of his 82-year-old grandmother in Bolobedu.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the man, who lived with his grandmother, returned home early on Saturday morning and woke her up, demanding that she give him the house keys so that he could gain entry to the house.
“The suspect entered the house and allegedly attacked his frail grandmother and strangled her until she was unconscious. Then he allegedly raped her.
“After regaining consciousness a few minutes later, the woman alerted her neighbours and told them what had happened. A neighbour contacted her daughter and the police. The elderly woman was taken to hospital, and a search for the suspect was launched.
“After a search of 27 hours, the suspect was arrested in a nearby village on Sunday,” Mulaudzi said.
He said the elderly woman had sustained serious injuries and was recuperating well in hospital.
The suspect appeared briefly before the Bolobedu magistrate’s court on Monday and was remanded in custody until his next appearance on Monday, during which a bail application is expected to be made.
The identity of the suspect cannot be revealed, in order to protect the identity of his victim, Mulaudzi explained.
