POLOKWANE – A R50 000 reward is being offered to any person who provides information that leads to the arrest of the person or people responsible for the senseless killing of two rare black impala that were worth around R400 000 each.
The Van Niekerk family, who were the owners of the buck, is offering the reward. Basie van Niekerk said the buck were killed on the smallholding in Tweefontein in two separate incidents; one killing occurred some three weeks ago, and the latest incident took place on Saturday.
He said when the first buck was killed, a neighbour who said he had heard a shot being fired contacted him. “I drove around but could not find anything. It was past 20:00. In the morning, we found one of the ewes who had been shot in the stomach. She was in her final stage of pregnancy and the bullet went through her and her unborn calf,” Van Niekerk said.
In the latest incident that occurred on Saturday, the family was not home. On their return, they found a second ewe, which was only nine months old, that had been shot and killed. “These animals were killed as someone’s idea of fun. No meat was taken. We urge people to come forward with information that will lead to the arrest of the people who killed these animals,” Van Niekerk said.
