SESHEGO – A 37-year-old police constable and a 50-year-old traffic official both appeared in court last Friday after they were arrested in connection with two separate charges of corruption.
Provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronél Otto, said Const Solomon Mobolawa Malatjie (50) appeared before the Seshego magistrate’s court after he allegedly demanded a bribe of R1 000 to make a case docket “disappear”.
“The complainant in this case was arrested by the constable late in December for possession of suspected stolen property, but the prosecutor declined to prosecute because of insufficient evidence.
“The constable allegedly told the complainant that he could still be rearrested and demanded a sum of R1 000 for the docket to disappear.
“A meeting was arranged and the constable was arrested shortly after the money was handed over.
“He was granted R1 000 bail and the case was remanded to February 27 for further investigation,” she said.
“In Nebo, a 50-year-old head of traffic, Steve Boy-Boy Mohlahla, appeared before the Nebo magistrate’s court on charges of corruption and theft. It is alleged that he impounded a taxi and accepted bribes instead of issuing fines for traffic offences.
“The owner of the taxi allegedly had to pay him R2 800 to have the vehicle returned to her.
“The suspect was released on R1 200 bail and will appear in court again on February 19,” Otto said.
