SEKHUKHUNE – A SEKHUKHUNE woman is due to return to court on 27 January after being accused of murdering her boyfriend on Christmas Day.
According to the police, Odies Maleka (22) from Rest in Peace village next to the small town of Marble Hall in the Ephraim Mogale municipality was stabbed by his girlfriend Joyce Mokone (25) in a fit a rage and jealousy.
It has been reported that the bloody incident happened at a local tavern after the girlfriend saw her boyfriend flirting with prostitutes.
In a fit of rage, Mokone, who is from Leewfontein township, approached Maleka with a knife and stabbed him in the throat, police said.
Marble Hall police spokesperson, Capt Lethunya Muroa, Mokone died inside the tavern.
An eye witness, who spoke to CV on condition of anonymity, described the drunken drama as a terrifying experience.
“First it was just intense verbal exchanges.
“The situation very quickly degenerated into chaos due to the drunkenness of the two and the seriousness of their bickering.
“Out of the blue, the state of affairs became messy and an altercation ensued.
“The angry woman took out a knife and stabbed her boyfriend in the throat.
“It was a terrifying experience for revellers to witness a man dying right in front of them”.
Muroa said the woman was arrested at the crime scene.
Mokone made her first court appearance on 29 December in the Groblersdal magistrate’s court where she was remanded in custody.
She returned to the same courtroom last week Tuesday for a formal bail application and was granted a R1000 bail.
As police investigations continue, Muroa said the police strongly condemn this type of behaviour.
“The police discourage this tendency of carrying dangerous weapons like knives and guns to places of entertainment as they are the root causes of fights at taverns.
“We are also calling on tavern owners to ensure patron’s safety at their drinking joints by searching their customers and confiscating dangerous weapons whenever it is possible,” Muroa explained.
