3 in court for robbery after cigarettes stolen

TWO suspects appeared before the Seshego magistrate's court on Thursday for robbing a delivery truck, making off with cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash.

SESHEGO – TWO suspects appeared before the Seshego magistrate’s court on Thursday for robbing a delivery truck, making off with cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The incident took place when the truck delivered the goods to a local shop in Makgofe village in Mmotong.

According to WO Mothemane Malefo of the Seshego police, the driver was delivering cigarettes to one of the local shops when three men robbed him of the cigarettes and cash at gunpoint.

Malefo said the three men loaded the stolen goods in their vehicle and drove off with the driver of the truck.

“The police were alerted and there was a high speed chase with the suspects, who were arrested on the Gilead road next to Maupye village. That’s when the stolen goods, the cash two firearms and the driver of the delivery truck were recovered,” said Malefo. He said no one was injured during the incident.

Malefo has advised delivery truck drivers to be careful when they are on the road. He said they must check for any unusual activity when they off-load goods from the vehicle and when they make stops at shops or filling stations.

“Drivers must always check their surroundings. They must always have the number of their nearest police station on speed dial so they can alert the police of any unusual activity,” he said.

The case was remanded for February 4 for bail application.
