TWO women, aged 39 and 23 years, from Zimbabwe and Lesotho respectively were denied bail by the Musina magistrate’s court last Tuesday.
They were appearing in connection with attempting to cross the Beit Bridge border from Zimbabwe to South Africa on Sunday night while being the possession of illegal drugs worth over R8 million.
Provincial police spokes-person, Ronél Otto said the women were arrested as they were walking across the bridge from Zimbabwe into South Africa. She said they were stopped and searched by South African Revenue Services officials who found the two women in possession of 18kg of ephedrine.
“The assistance of the police was requested. Ephedrine is a main ingredient of Cat (methcathinone), and the 18kg of ephedrine that was found is valued at around R8 million,” she said.
“Investigations to determine where the women came from and where they were headed are ongoing,” she said.
The two women remained in custody and were due to appear before court at the time of going to print on Tuesday.
