Mahwelereng man sentenced to 13 years

A 18 year-old man from Mahwelereng has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of rape.

MOKOPANE – A 18 year-old man from Mahwelereng has been sentenced to 13 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of rape in the Mokerong regional court on February 5.

According to a media statement from the Mahwelereng police station, it is alleged that the 13 year-old victim was on her way home in Sekgakgapeng when she was confronted by Joel Kagiso Mashala.

Mashala threatened the victim with his five dogs and dragged her into the nearest bush where he raped her.

Mashala started to run when he noticed a man was passing by, the man chased after and caught Mashala.

He handed Mashala over to Const Tina Matsimbi. The victim opened a case of rape against Mashala at the Mahwelereng police station.

“We welcome the sentence and it will serve as an example to men to respect women and children,” stated Capt Steve Mabuza from Mahwelereng police station, in a press release.
