POLOKWANE – MORE than 100 textbooks were found dumped in Polokwane near the railway line in Veldspaat Street, Magna Via on Friday.

The textbooks, which included Life Skills gr. 8, Hospitality gr. 10, Rekeningkunde gr. 11, Gasvryheidstudies in Praktyk gr. 10, Rainbow Arts & Culture gr. 8, Fisiese Wetenskappe, Wiskunde gr. 12, Physical Science gr. 12 and Elecrical Technology gr. 10, were discovered by a Zimbabwean, Lovemore Dube, who was collecting scrap metal when he came across the textbooks.

All of them were still new and nobody knew how they got there, Dube said. “Some books were scattered along the street and motorists took some of them. I wonder why textbooks were dumped when there is a shortage of textbooks at some schools,” he said.

Education spokesperson, Paena Galane, said the case was being investigated by the police. “The books were still new, but nobody broke into our warehouse. We are tracing the serial numbers of the books and we are relying on the police investigation right now,” Galane said.

Provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronél Otto confirmed that the police were investigating the origin of the textbooks, as well as the identity of the person who dumped the textbooks.
