Mitchell House College’s open day

POLOKWANE – For many gr. 7 learners and their parents, choosing the right high school can be a daunting task.

Mitchell House College made this decision easier by hosting an open day on March 11.

Learners and their pa-rents from schools such as Pemps, Pietersburg Comprehensive School, Noorderland High School, Capricorn High School and Unicorn Preparatory School were invited to attend.

“I am really proud of Mitchell House,” said headmaster, Andrew Cook.

“The preparatory school was founded in 1994 on Capricorn High School’s premises, where buildings were rented under the name Mitchell House. That is where the school’s name originated.”

In 2004, the school moved to its present cam-pus, and in 2006, the Enrichment Centre was completed.

In 2008, the college was founded and in 2012, they saw their first gr. 12 class.

“The Enrichment Centre caters for 24 disabled learners who are involved in mainstream classes. We believe in diversity and we have had a 100% matric pass rate since 2012.

“You are going to need skills, not only knowledge. We want to teach habits that make people successful; character values,” he said.

Mitchell House also offers boarding house facilities and a variety of sporting activities.

“We place a high value on sportsmanship and ethics on all our sporting teams. We will have basketball, as well as girls’ soccer team soon. Our goal is dependability and reliability,” said Fred Romijn, Mitchell House’s sports director.

“We will turn green into gold,” he said.

The learners and their parents enjoyed a tour of the hostel and college buildings, and were treated to a science demonstration by learner, Thakgatso Ntsoane and an information session with learner, Doug Friedemann, who told them interesting facts about different skulls.

“In the beginning it was a challenge to be in gr. 8, but Mitchell House is a great and fun school. Some of the teachers are strict, but everyone will help where they can,” says Katlego Maemola, a gr. 8 learner.

Bridget Mothapo, a gr. 9 learner, said she received the best education and that she became part of a family.

“This school awarded me with opportunities.”
