Ex-police sentenced to 2 years for stock theft

THE Seshego magistrate's court sentenced a former police sergeant and his two accomplices to two years' imprisonment for stock theft last Monday.

POLOKWANE –  THE Seshego magistrate’s court sentenced a former police sergeant and his two accomplices to two years’ imprisonment for stock theft last Monday.

A provincial police spokesperson, Const Tsietsi Lamola, said Sgt Ramasete Frans Nyalungu (43), who was attached to the Polokwane stock theft unit, Johannes Kale (48) and William Hlako (35) were found guilty of stealing nine cattle at Mamehlabe village in Ga-Matlala and were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment without the option of paying a fine.

Through an internal disciplinary hearing, Nyalungu was dismissed from the service following thorough investigations and findings by the South African Police Service management in line with the Labour Act, said Lamola.

He added that it appeared that Nyalungu still had a criminal case of the same nature pending against him and another accomplice in Mogwadi.

Referring to the case for which the three men had just been sentenced, Lamola said nine cattle were reported missing from the grazing camp at Ga-Matlala, Mamehlabe village.

Provincial police commissioner, Lt Genl Fannie Masemola, welcomed the sentence. “We urge all farmers to brand their livestock for identification purposes.

“We (the police) are not an archive for corrupt and rotten individuals,” Masemola said.
