‘Sad, she was so little’

LOUIS TRICHARDT – A tragic discovery was made on Tuesday morning when a dog and its owner emerged from the veld with a foetus in the dog’s mouth, in the region of the corner of Kort and Jeppe Street.

While the owner of the dog was unavailable for comment, a neighbour, Altie van den Heever, spoke to Review.

Van den Heever heard the police and saw the commotion. She went to find out what was happening. She said when she saw the tiny foetus, her heart broke into a million pieces. “A little baby was lying there; it was a little girl. I will never forget that little body lying there. Her face was black and full of blood. Her chest was blue and her arms and legs were white, I suppose from the cold. It is so sad, she was so little,” Van den Heever said.

Review also spoke to a construction worker who did not wish to be identified. He said he saw the dog running out of the veld towards the house with something in its mouth.

Makhado police spokesperson, Const Irene Radzilani, said the police were investigating a case of concealment of birth. “The foetus is thought to be that of a child born in the sixth month of pregnancy,” she said.

No arrests had taken place as yet and the police urged anyone with information to contact the Makhado police at (015) 519 4300 or Radzilani at 082 565 8233.
