The woman behind the nurse

Musoliwa Masindi had not idea she would received this year's Mediclinic Limpopo Nursing Excellence Award on Tuesday, so when her name was called, she was speechless.

POLOKWANE – Musoliwa Masindi had not idea she would received this year’s Mediclinic Limpopo Nursing Excellence Award on Tuesday, so when her name was called, she was speechless.

This 31-year-old registered professional theatre nurse started her nursing career in 2008 after finishing her studies at the Baragwanath Nursing College.

“I did not plan to become a nurse. I started my studies with a Bachelor of Science. Nursing was never my first choice but at the end of my studies I decided to try it and I love every second of it,” she said.

Her first job was at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and in December 2010 she started her career at Mediclinic Limpopo where she is now working in the theatre.

“The best part of my job is each time that I have helped save a life; that were it not for my actions, the patient could have died,” she explained.

She said working with people including those doctors who were pleasant, made her life worthwhile, but the late hours were sometimes too much.

“I do enjoy my work. And my advice to other nurses is that they should also enjoy their work. Give the patient the care you would have wanted if you were in his or her position. Keep on learning. If you do not know something ask and always respect others,” she advised.

She further said the award really meant a lot to her and she was happy that her colleagues thought so highly of her.

Her unit manager, Gugulethu Rangata, said she was very proud of Musoliwa. “She works hard and deserves the award,” she said.
