Westenburg: 30 years later

Westenburg Secondary School celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala dinner at the school on Saturday evening, where former teachers, principals and learners got a chance to go down memory lane.

POLOKWANE – Westenburg Secondary School celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala dinner at the school on Saturday evening, where former teachers, principals and learners got a chance to go down memory lane.

Families of late former principals were also in attendance.

Guests enjoyed a three course meal, which was served during the course of the programme.

Former principals were given the opportunity to give a speech at the gala dinner and these included Tlou Ramara, who was the principal for a few months in 2009 and is currently the principal of Taxila Secondary School, William Swartz, who was principal from 1996 until 2009 and Johannes Mohamed, who was principal from 1983 until 1984.

The School Governing Body (SGB) honoured those who were principal from 1972, from New Petersburg moving to Westenburg, until 2014.

The families of the late principals were asked to receive the certificates in honour of their loved ones. The late principals included: John Smith, Pius Rogers and David Wathen.

Giles Rogers, son of Pius Rogers, thanked the SGB on behalf of his family for acknowledging his father. Clifford Smith thanked the SGB on behalf of the Smith family for the acknowledgement of their family member, John Smith.

The teachers who taught at the school form 1972, from New Petersburg moving to Westenburg, until 1985 were also honoured with certificates of appreciation by the SGB.

Japhilin de Beer on behalf of all the teachers of 1985 and prior years wished the school a happy 30th anniversary and thanked the school management for the awards.

Connie Southon, who was the first head girl at the school was also one of the speakers.

After all the formalities and dinner, the dance floor was opened and the evening ended on a social note.
