POLOKWANE – MANKWENG police are investigating case of theft under false pretences after a 19-year-old student fell victim to this recently.
The complainant, alleged that on June 9 at around 11:00, when he was about to board a taxi to go home, he was approached by an unknown man who asked for help to off-load goods at the Mankweng Hospital.
According to the police, the suspect promised the victim R200 in advance. According to police information, the victim allegedly agreed and got into the car of the suspect.
Spokesperson for the Mankweng police, Const Matimba Maluleke said: “according to the victim, on their way to hospital the suspect gave him his bank card and urged him to go and withdraw the R200 he was promised.
“The victim got out off the car and left his bags, which contained money, clothes and cell phones and walked to the ATM.
When he tried to process the transaction at the ATM, he realised that the bank card was not working. When he returned to where he left the suspect, the man was gone. He started asking people around if they saw the man, but to no avail.
No one has been arrested yet. The police warn residents to be aware of criminals who pretend to offer jobs or assistance in any way.”
