LIMPOPO – THE Mutale Municipality’s budget speech, which was scheduled for Friday, was postponed until further notice as the mayor and municipal manager have allegedly not reported to work for a week as a salary scale adjustment protest continues at the municipality.
Colbert Nempumbuluni, chairperson of the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in Mutale Municipality, said they were worried that instead of addressing the plight of municipal workers of a salary scale adjustment, the mayor, Sarah Rammbuda and municipal manager, Shumani Razwiedani did not report to work.
“It seems they are not willing to solve our problems, and if we do not work, there will be no delivery of services to communities,” said Nempumbuluni.
Nempumbuluni said when they realised the mayor and municipal manager had not reported to work in a week, they reported the matter to the ANC in the Vhembe region.
“The ANC said they were not aware that the mayor and municipal manager did not come to work as usual, and promised to look into the matter,” he said.
Municipal spokesperson, Thiathu Ravhura confirmed that the mayor and municipal manager had not reported to work in a week.
Ravhura said the municipality postponed the budget speech as employees were still picketing.
Attempts to get comment from Rammbuda and Razwiedani were unsuccessful as both their phones were switched off.
By the time of going to print, service delivery at the Mutale Municipality was still halted as workers still protested.
