Shark attack in Plettenberg Bay

NATIONAL – Bathers and surfers are urged to be cautious following a shark attack on a 23-year-old surfer offf-shore of Lookout Beach in Plettenberg Bay late Friday, 26 June.
According to Plettenberg Bay News, Dylan Reddering, a local resident and a student at the University of Cape Town (UCT), was rescued by fellow surfers after the shark attack.
Following eye-witness reports, the NSRI Plettenberg Bay station emergency call-out siren was sounded and the crew was activated at 17:15.
The NSRI sea rescue craft, rescue swimmers and medics were dispatched to the scene.
Reddering suffered lacerations and deep bite marks on the right side of his body, on his ribs, on his buttocks and on his leg.
NSRI medics and Baycare paramedics initiated medical treatment and he was carried on a surfboard to the beach parking area and loaded into a waiting ambulance and transported to hospital.
He was stabilised at Plettenberg Bay Medi-Clinic and was to be transferred to another facility for further medical treatment.
The species of shark has not yet been determined and will be part of ongoing shark encounter research said Deon Truter, NSRI Plettenberg Bay station commander.
“It is suspected to be a 2 to 3 meter White Shark,” said Truter
