LIMPOPO – AFTER he realised that he could improve his life with fashion, Smurts Machaka (22) from Ga-Matlapa in Ga-Mashashane took a leap into the fashion industry.

Machaka says although he didn’t finish matric due to family problems, this never stopped him from reaching his goals.

He studied carpentry at Libsa Training Centre.

“I am now focused on my label called Note Man. I make a profit of at least R2 000 and I’m able to buy more material for the business. My customers always praise my designs,” he says.

Machaka says watching fashion channels on TV and reading fashion magazines has influenced him.

“It is always nice to see people wear my designs, it makes me feel good,” he says.

He says he is inspired by fashion designers, Kara Janx and David Tlale.

“You must be creative in terms of colour and you must know how to combine the different colours. I would like to be one of the young successful designers in the province and the country. I will continue to learn from people who have been in the industry longer than me.”

Machaka advises young people not to depend on government or expect anyone to help them.

“We should create our own businesses and avoid drugs and alcohol as these can prevent us from reaching our goals,” he said.
