Food tenders close

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane police and traffic officers were on high alert at the department of education in Biccard Street yesterday morning (Wednesday) for the closing of a schools food scheme tender.

According to the police on the scene, their presence and the barricading of Biccard Street was the result of the bombing of a tender box at the department in May.

Education spokesperson, Sam Makondo, said the tender submissions closed at 11:00 and that no incidents were reported.

He said the tenders would now be processed and the new contractors would be appointed in due time.

Thousands of bids in the hotly contested R870 million schools food scheme tender were shredded when the box they were submitted in was set alight in May.

Between April 26 and May 26, more than 8 000 businesses submitted their bid documents hoping for a share in the lucrative contract. However, the tender box that was set alight did not halt the submission process as the department moved up the deadline to July 1.

The bombing of the tender box is being investigated by the Hawks.
