MOKOPANE – THE three suspects in the Charles Mgidi murder case were represented by a new defense attorney on Tuesday morning in the Mokopane magistrate’s court and the case was postponed by chief magistrate André van der Kooi until August 19 for further investigations.
Patrick Sekhu, Samuel Matjila and Desmond Machaba all well-known taxi-owners, appeared before the Mokopane magistrate’s court on Tuesday morning for the murder of Charles Mgidi.
Mgidi, a member of the Mogalakwena Residents Association, (MRA), was shot on April 4 at the Caltex Garage in Nelson Mandela Drive by the three suspects and died on his way to the hospital.
Outside of the Mokopane magistrate’s court, Hooge Street was blocked off by police and traffic officials while more than 300 residents took part in a legal march led by the MRA to send a message to the judiciary. “We as the community of Mogalakwena are opposing bail to any criminal accused of murder and that justice must prevail,” said Percy Nketse, chairperson of the MRA.
The state prosecutor asked for a postponement until October 2 for further investigations and to draw up an indictment as one of the suspects was involved in another case.
Van der Kooi granted the postponement only until August 19. “This is a serious case and it does not take three months to draw up an indictment,” Van der Kooi said.
The tree suspects remain in custody until their next appearance in court on August 19.
