LIMPOPO – PEOPLE who live in Section-D2 along Thomo main road in Giyani are in danger of becoming seriously ill due to a leaking sewerage system which has not been attended to since it started leaking around April.
According to DA councillor, Hasani Shibambu, who says he has been trying unsuccessfully to have it repaired since May, attempts to get government to fix it have been fruitless.
The sewage leaks into the storm water drain that flows through Section-E and D1, which according to Shibambu, could pose a threat to people contracting cholera and other illnesses. “I have been trying unsuccessfully since May to get the Greater Giyani Municipality to fix the problem, but no one seems willing to take responsibility,” Shibambu says. “Sometimes the sewage even overflows onto the road.”
Meanwhile, residents in Section-D2 near where the sewage leak is say it is impossible to live with the stench caused by the leaking sewage. One resident, Simon Ngobeni, says they have to close all their windows to prevent the foul smell from permeating their living areas. “The smell is so strong that you cannot enjoy your food with the windows open,” Ngobeni says.
Mopani District Municipality spokesperson, Neil Shikwambana, says the matter will be taken care of soon. “The district municipality is busy assessing the sewerage system. We have sent our technical team to assess the problem so we can see how best we can fix it,” he says.
