LIMPOPO – TYPICALLY, most teenagers are at home busy on their phones or playing video games all day. But a group of youngsters, who go by the name The Majors, are determined to make a difference.

The Majors music group started their musical journey early this year. They are comprised of five members, William Maponya, Themba Mohlahlani, Tshilidzi Ndou, Katlego Phashe and Bimini Nyakale.

They make hip hop, RnB and house music and say they started the group not only because of their passion for music, but to give back to their community.

“We started our own record label called Intoxicated Clown and Siege to give local artists a platform to kick start their careers. We saw that a lot of artists do not have an outlet for their music and that’s the main reason we started the label,” says Maponya.

The group hosted an event called Majors on July 11, which aimed to get creatives from different disciplines under one roof.

According to the group, there were clothing designers, musicians and dancers from around Polokwane at the event.

Even though the group is multi-faceted, they say their main focus is hip hop as it is a popular genre.

According to Ndou, hip hop is a growing and very popular genre, especially among young people.

“Hip hop is growing in popularity and a lot of young people can relate to it,” says Ndou.

Asked what were some of the challenges they have faced so far, the group say it is difficult to get funding.

“We are trying to get our own studio, so that some of our artists can record there, but as of now, we are still struggling to make that happen. We even use money from our own pockets to make some of our events happen,” says Maponya.

Even with the challenges they face, they say they will still forge ahead in an attempt to give artists a chance to become brands in their own right. Moving ahead, they are very hopeful for the future.
