LOUIS TRICHARDT – Graffiti all over the Hendrik Verwoerd tunnels between Louis Trichardt and Musina is not only unsightly, but also interferes with the livelihood of some men.
The tunnels, which were named after former South African prime minister, are a well known and popular tourist attraction, with a monument for Verwoerd also being at the tunnels.
Following a complaint over the graffiti, which according to the complainant, a resident of Louis Trichardt who wishes to remain anonymous, the most prominent and insulting graffiti reads ‘Verwoerd se g*t’
Review went to the tunnels to investigate. At the tunnels, two men who did not wish to be identified, said they took photos for tourists who stopped to look at the tunnels and monument. They said this was what they did for a living.
“The tourists stand at the monument with the tunnels in the background.
“They are eager to have a photo of themselves at the tunnels as they are historical. But the pictures do not look good with all the graffiti,” they said.
According to Wikipedia, Verwoerd is regarded as the mastermind behind socially engineering and implementing the racist policies of Apartheid.
He survived an assassination attempt in 1960, but was killed in an assassination in 1966.
According to Makhado police spokesperson, Const Irene Radzilane, anyone putting graffiti on any item that does not belong to them is against the law.
“The owners of the affected properties can open a case of malicious damage to property and the suspects may be arrested and charged,” she said.
Review also attempted to contact Makhado Municipality spokesperson, Louis Bobodi to find out who was responsible for removing the graffiti in question, however, by the time of going to print, no response had been received.
