Rapist guilty: 15 years

A 23-YEAR-OLD man tried to commit suicide after he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in the Mokerong magistrate's court in Mahwelereng on July 13 for the rape of a 16-year-old girl in 2013.

LIMPOPO – A 23-YEAR-OLD man tried to commit suicide after he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in the Mokerong magistrate’s court in Mahwelereng on July 13 for the rape of a 16-year-old girl in 2013.

According to a media statement by Const Sello Leso, spokesperson for the Mahwelereng police,” the 16-year-old girl was on her way home from a tavern with a friend on Sunday September 1 2013, at Gilead-GaNkidikitlane village when they were approached by the known suspect.

It is alleged that the suspect grabbed the victim and forced her to his house where he raped her. The victims friend ran to the nearest police station and reported the incident, the Gilead police and crime prevention unit arrested the suspect on the same day.”

“Kagiso Magongwa, appeared before the Mokerong magistrate’s court on September 2, 2014, bail was denied by the magistrate and he remained in custody up until July 13 where he was found guilty of rape in the Mokerong magistrate’s court. It is alleged that Magongwa attempted to commit suicide after the ruling, by consuming poison,” reported Leso.

Leso stated that the case was thoroughly investigated by detective Const Lesetja Langa of the Mokopane Family, Violence and Child Protection Unit.
