MOKOPANE – No arrests have been made following a recent armed robbery in De Klerk Street, where a father and his two teenage sons were tied up while four suspects ransacked their home.
This is the fourth family which has been targeted in less than two months.
“It all happened so fast, I was scared they were going to shoot us,” said the 17-year-old victim (his name will not be mentioned due to his age).
His mother, Sabira Mahmood (42) spoke to Bosveld Review on Tuesday afternoon:
“It was 07:50 and I asked my youngest son to help me carry a box to my car, he then opened the gate for me and I left for work”.
She said her son went back into the house and saw mudstains on the floor. He went out to clean his shoes and when he reentered the house, one of the suspects jumped him from behind.
The boy said he fought with the suspect and yelled for his dad.
“A second suspect appeared and threatened me with a taser. They pressed a glove into my mouth and tied my hands and feet with packaging tape.”
Hafiz (35), Sabira’s husband, said: “I woke up to two suspects pointing their firearms at me and demanding money. I immediately gave them all the cash that we had in the house.”
He further said they also tied his and his eldest son’s (18) hands and feet together and ordered them to stay in his son’s room.
The boy said after they tied him up they also took him to his brother’s room, where they threw blankets over their heads.
“I thought they were going to shoot us,” he said.
Hafiz said within 15 minutes they ransacked the whole house and left in his car, a Toyota Corolla, along with R4 000 cash, a cell phone, a laptop and his wife’s jewellery.
According to the Mahmoods there were four suspects – two had firearms, one had a taser and the fourth suspect was unarmed.
“They were all wearing hoodies and All Star shoes, and only one of the suspects’ faces were covered.”
Sabira said: “They were definitely watching us, they even knew my husband went to the bank yesterday. They were hiding in the garden, and the rain this morning made it impossible to hear them.
“This has been our safe haven, our home for the last three years and now it has been intruded on and violated.
“I am just relieved that my husband and my children are safe and unhurt.”
Mokopane police spokesperson, Sgt Irene Masingi, said the car was recovered about 8 km from the scene.
“No arrests have been made as yet and investigations continue,” she added.
