LIMPOPO – The Limpopo police have arrested more than 1 400 people during special festive season operations, which started on 23 December and ended on 27 December.
According to provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, 407 people were arrested for contact crimes, which included murder, attempted murder, rape, assault and robbery.
“A total of 111 people were apprehended for driving under the influence of liquor, 47 undocumented people were arrested, 28 were nabbed for shoplifting, 16 for theft, while 18 suspects were arrested for housebreaking and a further two for stock theft,” said Otto.
The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Fannie Masemola congratulated the police on these arrests and warned criminals that police operations would intensify during the last few days of the year and into the new year.
“We will not allow Limpopo to become a breeding ground for criminals from other areas who think they can destabilise the peace and stability in the province,” said Masemola.
He urged communities to remain vigilant and not become careless as they enjoyed the last few days in anticipation and celebration of the new year.
“We can never be too careful and too prepared and by working with the police and CPFs in our communities we can ensure a safe and enjoyable period for all,” he said.
