Alliance campaigns for Zuma to resign
Defend the Constitution Alliance is not a church structure, and calls on all to join, including non-Christians
POLOKWANE – Rev Mautji Pataki along with other church leaders ask the public to join a new forum they’re starting, which is aimed at getting president Jacob Zuma to step down.
They held a prayer meeting at the Anglican Cathedral Church in Polokwane on Thursday.
Pataki said the Defend the Constitution Alliance is not a church structure, and that everybody is welcome to join, including non-Christians.
“As leaders of the church, we had to come together to initiate this project, but it is in no way a church activity,” said Pataki.
The forum called on civil society organisations, trade unions, young people and women groups to come on board.
Speakers at the launch were scathing of Zuma, with Pataki likening him to a biblical “emperor” who is “naked and confused”, a reference previously used by EFF leader Julius Malema in reference to Zuma.
Pataki said God had spoken to Zuma through the court judgement, and that the president must read the “writing on the wall” and help this country, as well as himself by stepping down.
“The emperor is now naked, he’s confused. He has lost the ability to lead, the ability to govern. He has lost moral authority to lead this nation,” said Pataki.
The ANC in Limpopo backs the call for Zuma not to resign. Provincial spokesperson, Aluwani Netsianda said they would meet with the pastors and anyone else that called for Zuma’s removal, to explain the ANC’s position on the matter.
