3 dead, 3 injured in R510 accident

An accident on Thursday morning (16 June) on the R510 road close to Northam claimed the lives of three people.

LIMPOPO – The accident involving a truck, a sedan and a pedestrian occurred at around 07:00 about 2 kilometres from Northam.

Athlenda Mathe, Netcare 911 Spokesperson said: “Allegedly it was a misty morning and the driver of the truck swerved out in an attempt not to hit the pedestrian next to the road and crashed head-on with a sedan. The truck driver also ended up hitting the pedestrian.”

The driver of the sedan, a passenger on the back seat of the sedan and the pedestrian were declared dead on the scene by paramedics. The truck driver was not injured in the accident and did not require any medical treatment.

Emergency crews used the jaws of life to extract the deceased driver and passenger in the front seat from the vehicle, adds Mathe.

“The three injured, who were passengers in the sedan, sustained minor to critical injuries and where rushed to the Northam Mining Hospital,” Kagiso Mootane, Departmental Spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Transport, said.

The accident is still under investigation.
