Good citizen takes charge at crash site
"I was the first on the scene. I had to control traffic to avoid further accidents."
POLOKWANE – “I was the first on the scene. I had to control traffic to avoid further accidents.”
Capricorn District Municipality’s employee sports coordinator and Inter-Municipal Sports of South Africa (Imssa) president, Alpheus Mashamaite put his traffic control skills to the test on Sunday after witnessing an accident on the Matlala road near Seshego Zone 5.
A bakkie and a taxi transporting learners collided at around 14:00. One patient was airlifted to hospital while the others were transported to hospital by ambulance.
According to Mashamaite, other motorists did not pay attention to the accident, and he had to take control of the traffic at that point.
When asked why he did this he explained: “I did this out of the goodness of my heart and I wish other citizens could do the same.”
He added that he had to call the relevant emergency departments for assistance.
“Citizens should know the emergency numbers by heart to save lives,” he added.
Seshego Police Spokesperson, WO Mothemane Malefo urged citizens to take responsibility like Mashamaite to minimise road accidents and deaths. He also encouraged people to store emergency numbers on their phones.
