As part of its mandate to ensure free and fair elections, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Limpopo conducted a workshop in the city on Tuesday to inform independent candidates of various matters regarding the municipal elections on 3 August. Some 100 candidates signed a Code of Conduct.
Nkaro Mateta, Provincial Electoral Officer of the IEC Limpopo welcomed the candidates and said that the number of voting stations in the province has been increased by 10% from 2 781 in 2011 to the current 3 111. “By increasing the number of voting stations, we aim to ensure that voters will travel shorter distances to vote but also that they do not have to stand in unnecessarily long queues. There are a total of 56 registered political parties on the IEC’s database, compared to only 21 in 2011 and 36 of these parties are contesting elections for the first time in 2016,” Mateta informed.
Mateta also confirmed that all voters on the voters’ roll will be allowed to vote, regardless of the absence of addresses. “The Constitutional Court has ruled that the IEC should proceed with the elections and will have time until 2019 to obtain addresses. The IEC will proceed with this task as from election day by providing an opportunity for voters to register at the voting stations as they come to vote. Provision is also made for voters with no formal addresses to register their addresses by describing where they live,” Mateta said.
In conclusion Mateta encouraged independent candidates and their supporters to adhere and respect the Code of Conduct.
“Positive action of compliance to the Code will benefit all our citizens in the province and promote political tolerance and free political activity. We reaffirm that no life must be lost because of elections, no person must suffer physical pain from violence and intimidation because of elections,” Mateta said.
