Shoprite and Checkers stores in Polokwane were abuzz on Monday morning when employees rallied to get everything ready in order to make sandwiches for underprivileged schools in rural areas around the city in honour of Mandela Day.
The Shoprite Group has undertaken to make 67 000 sandwiches countrywide for charities in need this Mandela Day and has pledged to keep doing this every month for the next year until Mandela Day 2017.
The peanut butter sandwiches initiative forms part of the group’s comprehensive Hunger Relief Programme, which involves the donation of surplus food from all of its stores to hundreds of non-profit organisations feeding thousands of hungry people daily.
The initiative also includes Shoprite’s Mobile Soup Kitchens, which reach vulnerable communities across the country every day.
Shoprite is mobilising employee volunteers across South Africa to #ActForChange in support of the initiative. Staff will spend 67 minutes of their normal work day preparing and packing sandwiches for local charities.
Africa’s largest food retailer is honouring the legacy of former President Nelson Mandela by heeding the call to address the issue of food security which remains a serious challenge in South Africa. According to FoodBank South Africa, more than 13,8 million people go hungry in the country every day.
Explaining their commitment to Mandela Day and fighting hunger, Neil Schreuder, Marketing Director at Shoprite said the company was inspired and motivated by Madiba’s many selfless acts to effect change every day of his life. “This is why we are extending our 67 000 peanut butter sandwiches drive to every month for a year, in the spirit of making every day a Mandela Day.”
Customers wanting to join forces with Shoprite to fight hunger this Mandela Day or throughout the month can donate R5 or more to the Group’s #ActForChange Fund at any till-point in both Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide. All funds collected will be donated to charities and feeding schemes working to fight hunger in local communities.
