Puleng Motupa's (22) invention, a light energy charger, has caught the attention of people and companies countrywide. Here he explains the idea behind his invention

POLOKWANE – Puleng Motupa (22), a young entrepreneur from Nobody village has been making headlines nationally with his groundbreaking invention. Puleng’s invention, a light energy charger, has caught the attention of people and companies countrywide. According to Puleng the charger uses light energy from the sun or a bulb to charge a cellphone. It converts the light into an energy source to power the battery. It is a product that he says plays a crucial role in terms of electrical strategies. Motupa’s invention was chosen as the winning entry at Transnet’s ‘Moving Ideas Competition’, and also attracted the attention of SABS and MTN respectively.
Motupa says he invented the charger as a way of bringing much needed relief to people who live in the villages where access to electricity is a constant struggle. “There are people who have to walk long distances just to charge their phones and I saw this as a huge problem because what happens when they have to make emergency calls. I wanted to create a product that will help remedy this problem and help people in rural areas,” Motupa explained.
The charger will range between R100-R150 and Motupa says he hopes the device will be available by the end of this year.
