Gogo celebrates 116th birthday

The community of Matlerekeng outside Marble Hall together with the Marble Hall Police and the Ephraim Mogale Victim Empowerment Centre (EMVEC) celerated Stephina Babili's 116th birthday with her.

LIMPOPO – Babili said the secret to her longevity lies in “not being lazy and sticking to a healthy diet”. She said: “When I was young, I had to walk long distances and that kept me strong and healthy. We did not eat just anything we came across, we made sure we ate healthy food such as fruit and vegetables”.

Babili, who is blessed with eight children, five daughters and three sons, 25 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, was showered with gifts including clothes, groceries and cosmetics from the EMVEC.

Nancy Mononyane, EMVEC Supervisor, said volunteers in Matlerekeng informed them of Babili’s big day and they jumped at the chance to celebrate the day with her. “We thought we should do something special for her birthday as it is a momentous occasion. You don’t often hear of people celebrating their 116th birthday,” said Mononyane.

Tiny, Babili’s granddaughter, said Babili is in good health except for an issue with her leg. Babili is grateful to everyone who celebrated her birthday with her.
