With recent reports of a kidnapping in the city, many issues surrounding the correct use of social media came into question.

POLOKWANE – Different social media sites reported information regarding the matter that was submitted by civilians which hindered the search as many of the claims made contradicted each other. There have been several instances where people were wrongfully accused because of information circulated on social media.

Community Policing Forums (CPF) regularly warn residents not to submit any information onto media platforms that is not factual.

Soetdorings CPF asked residents to remove a picture of a black BMW from the medium as the owner of the vehicle was being wrongfully accused of committing a crime.

“The man has the right to open a case of defamation of character against the people who shared pictures of his vehicle on social media,” the executive management of CPF’s in the city stated. CPF members have also been warned that they need to follow the chain of command and act only upon instruction to ensure CPF resources do not go to waste said Spokesperson for the committee, Johan Retters.
