The Department of Trade and Industry (dti) informed potential investors of the department’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs) during a provincial seminar at Protea Hotel Ranch Resort last Wednesday.
The event was part of the national roadshow aimed at promoting and creating awareness of the value of SEZs to provincial and local authorities and potential investors. Presentations were made by dti officials on SEZ tax incentives and the SEZ Fund.
Alfred Tau, Chief Director Special Economic Zones (SEZ) of the dti informed delegates that the purpose of the SEZ Programme is to expand the focus of strategic industrialisation to cover diverse regional development needs and context and to provide a clear, predictable and systemic planning framework for the development of a wider array of SEZs to support industrial policy objectives, the Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP), the National Development Plan (NDP) and the New Growth Path (NGP). The programme also clarifies and strengthens governance arrangements and expands the range and quality of support measures beyond the provision of infrastructure and provides a framework for predictable financing to enable long-term planning.
Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies is quoted to have said that the aim of the roadshow is to educate stakeholders on key aspects of legislation with effect to support a broader based industrialisation growth path and balanced regional economies with strong up and downstream links in strategic value chains. Tau informed that the Musina/Makhado SEZ is designated, but not operational as yet.
Maoto Molefane, Director SEZ Policy and Planning and Justice Ngwenya, Chief Director SEZ Incentives explained the SEZ tax incentives to delegates.
