Murder accused Rameez Patel appeared before the Limpopo Division of the High Court in Polokwane last Monday and Tuesday.
The case was postponed because Patel’s attorney, Tumi Mokwena hurt his hand and was unable to take notes. Yesterday (Wednesday) the case was postponed until 17 October.
Patel is standing trial for the alleged murder of his wife, Fatima Patel in April last year. Fatima’s sister Shakira, their mother Feroza Choonara and uncle, Mohamed Fahruk Choonara testified in court before Judge Joseph Raulinga. Another witness, Ridwaan Ghoord also testified.
The uncle testified to the accused wearing a jacket after the murder, something he allegedly never did before.
The uncle further testified to have seen scratches on Patel’s neck.
Feroza Choonara testified that Fatima, after the birth of her last child, had visited her mother and informed her that all was not well in her marriage with Patel allegedly having called her aside and saying that he wanted to separate from her. Mokwena denied this.
Shakira testified that Patel had a gun and whenever he went out with the neighbourhood watch he was armed.
He allegedly also told her that the contents of a brown bag she once asked him about, was a gun. Mokwena also refuted this, saying it was not the truth.
Shakira also testified to have seen bruises on Patel’s knuckles and scratches to his neck.
