From tomorrow (Friday) braai enthusiasts will be able to taste the three top recipes in this year’s Championship Boerewors competition when it becomes available in all Shoprite and Checkers stores, including Polokwane.
Customers will be able to buy a combo pack containing all three recipes, braai it, and vote for their favourite recipe by dialling the USSD code clearly marked on each pack.
The three finalists, Jacobus Kritzinger, Winter Letlhogile and Vukile Cele, started their Championship Boerewors journey in May when they and thousands of other hopefuls entered the competition. The number of contestants was whittled down through several stages of strict judging and the top three will compete in the final round on 15 September in Cape Town. The winner will win a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Double Cab Raised Body Raider.
From Joubertina in the Eastern Cape, 63-year-old Kritzinger’s passion for making boerewors has helped him to help others over the years.
Having managed an old age home for almost 20 years, he was motivated to open a butchery to support the home when he learnt that it was in serious debt. Through his winning boerewors recipe sold at the butchery, he helped the home pay off the debt within two years and continues to care for the elderly to this day.
Letlhogile believes that his three rules for making the perfect boerewors will ensure him the title. “Spices must be soaked in iced water, the boerewors maker must be cleaned and all meat used must be free from sinew,” is his advice.
He says to braai is in his blood and that winning the competition would be a validation of six years of preparation to perfect the ultimate boerewors recipe.
Durban finalist Cele has also used his background as a butcher to develop his winning recipe.
He focuses on texture, taste and using only the best quality meat to create a truly traditional South African boerewors which the judges loved.
