The key to safety is constant vigilance

Jannie Calitz, a local martial arts instructor, provides tips on how to stay safe on the streets.

POLOKWANE – Crime is a prominent issue in South Africa and in most cases, women and children are the victims.

According Jannie Calitz, a martial arts instructor in Polokwane, it is important for people of all ages to be able to protect themselves when faced with danger.

“Women and children are often the victims of violent crimes but it is important for everyone to know what to do in these situations. I would suggest people take up martial arts classes to learn how to defend themselves,” Calitz advises.

However, if you’re not able to take classes, Calitz provides these tips on how to stay safe on the streets:

• Always be aware of your surroundings. Especially when you’re withdrawing money at an ATM, while seated in your vehicle and at big sporting events.

• Learn to read people’s body language.

• When driving, constantly check your mirrors for suspicious people lurking around.

• Keep pepper spray in your bag, make sure it is not buried under a pile on nonessentials so you can easily reach for it in times of distress.

“In the end, I would suggest taking up martial arts training, because sometimes you won’t be able to run from or get rid of your attacker and you will need to fight back to save yourself,” Calitz concluded.
