School registration process in full swing

The Department of Education is currently in the process of informing applicants whether they have been accepted at the schools they applied to.

LIMPOPO – The right to basic education and equal access to educational institutions is embedded in the Constitution and has been taken forward in the South African Schools Act (1996) and the Northern Province School Education Act No. 9 of 1995, Gazette No.1937 of October 1998.

Spokesperson for the Department of Education, Dr Naledzani Rasila, said: “We at the Department of Education take these acts seriously and would like to accommodate all learners in the coming academic year. It is for this reason that we started with registration of learners for 2017 in mid-2016”.

Registration for Gr R and Gr 1 learners as well as those changing schools closed in July this year. “All parents and guardians were advised to apply to schools in the area they live in as per the admission policy. This is to the benefit of children who will otherwise have to travel long distances to get to school,” she continued.

The department is currently in the process of informing applicants whether they have been accepted at the schools they applied to.

Letters are issued to all applicants, regardless of whether they have been granted admission to the school or not.

“All the unsuccessful applications will be sent to the Circuit Offices for placements at other schools where space is still available and close to applicants’ residential areas. Parents and guardians are requested to forward their queries to their nearest Circuit Office as there will be no wholesale placements in January.”

The department would like to remind parents to make sure children are registered for administration before the end of September. January is dedicated to the beginning of learning and teaching and no late admissions will be processed during this time.

“Only special admission cases will be dealt with in January and each will be treated on its own merit.”
