Joe to know his fate on Wednesday

Former Muvhango actor, Joe Ragwala has been behind bars since the Easter weekend after apparently contravening a protection order.

LIMPOPO – He will know his fate in Retavi Magistrate Court today.

In 2010, Ragwala moved from Mangilasi village near Thohoyandou to stay with his girlfriend, Doris Mthembi‘s family house in Tzaneen.

According to sources, he attempted to alienate her family members from the residence once he realised they were receiving rent from tenants.

Doris’s brother, Shadrack Mthembi subsequently applied for a protection order from the Retavi Magistrate’s Office.

Joe Ragwala’s girlfriend, Doris Mthembi, is serving a six-year sentence for perjury after she lied about being kidnapped and raped at gunpoint.

“The order stipulated that Ragwala may not have received any of the rent and also could not keep anyone from staying at the house. By the end of March, he instructed all tenants to pay rent to him and threatened to kick out those who did not comply.”

According the Mthembi, Ragwala collected nearly R5 000 and disappeared after realising that he contravened the protection order.

“He was arrested on Good Friday. He must pay back the money. I don’t want to see him coming back to my parents’s house,” Mthembi said.

Capt Mike Shikwambana of the Retavi Police confirmed that Ragwala was arrested for contravening a protection order.

He was denied bail twice and and he will know his fate today (Wednesday), Shikwambana confirmed.

The situation occurred amid Doris Mthembi serving out a six-year sentence in the Thohoyandou Correctional Services for perjury after she lied about being kidnapped and raped at gunpoint by her former husband Goddard Mugwena, in 2013.

Magistrate Patrick Cloete of the Makhado Regional Court said Mthembi’s verdict would send a clear message to the community that lying before a court of law was a serious crime.

Ragwala and Mthembi are still facing charges of fraud in the Sibasa Regional Court on 15 to 19 May. They will appear again in the Giyani Magistrate Court on charges of conspiracy to murder on 20 to 21 July.
