POLOKWANE – Having an alternative source of electricity at your fingertips, or rather your feet in this case, that is both eco-friendly, renewable, and even good for your health might sound like a dream too good to be true.
Fardeen, a learner at Mitchell House, turned this dream into a reality with his project he showcased at the school’s recent Science Fair.

His project, Pedal Power, makes use of a bicycle, a battery, a light, and a speedometer to create renewable energy which will solve a lot of electricity qualms, especially in rural areas.
“There was a power outage while I was cycling in the complex where we live and I thought how cool it would be to use my bicycle to power a light bulb. This piqued my interest and I began doing some research, finding some interesting facts and ideas about how to generate electricity utilising my bicycle,” he explained.
He said seeing how many of the rural communities do not have access to electricity, he wanted to make something which could generate an alternative source of energy which was both convenient and would benefit the community in a good, healthy way.
He spent around three months researching the project and three weeks building it.
“I plan to improve even more with my next projects. My parents’ support and that of my sister, Faaria whose second place win during last year’s Tri-tech Science Fair inspired me to work hard on my project. I am also thankful to my teachers who have groomed me to reach this achievement,” he said.
