POLOKWANE – Many people do not know about Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) and its dangers and to educate their fellow learners about it, the Gr 9 class at Northern Muslim School (NMS) recently organised a money raising event to help create PH awareness with all proceeds going to the PH Kids SA foundation.
PH is a rare lung disorder in which the arteries which carry blood from the heart to the lungs become narrowed, making it difficult for blood to flow through the vessels. As a result, the blood pressure in these arteries, called pulmonary arteries, rises far above normal levels.
Under the supervision of their business studies teacher, Unah Mabesere, the learners sold delicious hotdogs and boerewors rolls for their PH Awareness Day.
In addition, the girls wore blue scarves on the day and boys donned blue ribbons on their uniforms. A substantial amount of money was raised on the day and Fatima Dada, a PH Kids SA representative, said all funds raised will be used for research.
“We are so grateful and thankful to NMS for going out of their way to host an event like this and help the foundation. We thank them greatly,” she told Review.
NMS Deputy Principal, Tasmiyah Moosa, said the school is always happy to get involved in community projects and hopes the money will make a difference in research towards a cure for the disease.
