Businessman who beats the odds
Fafeng Zhang (34), originally from Fujian in China, has learned tough lessons but continues to strive for excellence.
POLOKWANE – Fafeng completed his primary and high school education at Fujian Shen in China and he became a professional chef before emmigrating.
He moved to South Africa in 2008 and opened a business as he believes South Africa offers a bigger and better platform for such endeavours.
“I personally feel my business is flourishing because I get overwhelmingly positive feedback from my customers and it motivates me to do more.”
Due to the success of his business, he decided to jump head first into the business sector instead of attending university, a decision which has paid dividends.
“I went into business to help support my family in China. Unfortunately it hasn’t been smooth sailing as my business has been robbed about three times since I moved to South Africa. Although it is less than ideal, it has taught me how to be vigilant and cautious at all times. As a result of the robberies, I have also tightened my security measures,” he says.
Fafeng says he didn’t find challenges when opening his business in the city because a local cash and carry assists him with stock, and if they don’t have what he is looking for, they will source it for him as soon as possible.
“They have helped me a lot ever since I came to South Africa for my business, I even won a car for being such a loyal customer,” he adds.
He owns Phansa Eating House and Drumjam Liquor Store where his customers can enjoy a hearty meal or a refreshing drink while providing employment opportunities for his local community.
In business, he explains, nothing is possible unless you put your mind to it and work hard.
“You can do anything if you put enough effort and time into achieving your goals. Patience is a key factor in business as nothing good happens overnight. If you rush things, you will find you have more problems than you initially imagined. Give it time and everything will fall into place. Just work hard and don’t let anyone keep you from reaching your dreams.”
